After last season’s 34-0 loss to South Carolina, N.C. State took the field Thursday night in front of a national audience to seek revenge on the Gamecocks, and give Tom O’Brien his first opening weekend win of the season, but it wasn’t to be.
The offense did not get off to a good start as red-shirt senior running back Toney Baker fumbled the ball in the South Carolina red zone on the Pack’s first possession. The Gamecocks capitalized on the mistake as Brian Maddox ran in for a 1-yard touchdown.
O’Brien kept his promise as he played both Wilson and redshirt freshman Mike Glennon, but neither could find the end zone as Josh Czajkowski’s 43-yard field goal in the third quarter turned out to be State’s only score of the game when Wilson’s final throw into the end zone in the fourth quarter fell incomplete.
