The No. 9 Lady Tigers golf squad turned in another solid outing this weekend with a sixth-place finish against a stacked field in the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
LSU finished nine shots off the pace set by Southern California, who finished the tournament at 16-under par 560.
The tournament was scheduled for 54 holes over three days, but rainy conditions on Saturday forced the tournament to be shortened to a 36-hole event.
On Friday, the Lady Tigers shot their first team score under par of the season, posting a 2-under 286. The score was good enough to net them a tie for 10th place to open up the tournament.
Junior Megan McChrystal and sophomore Tessa Teachman led the Lady Tigers in the first round with both shooting 2-under 70s. Those scores tied them for the 15th best score on the opening day.
“The course has had a lot of rain, and it is really soft,” said LSU coach Karen Bahnsen in a news release. “We had some opportunities during the round and didn’t convert. We left a few strokes on the course at the end of the round, but the girls played well.”
The tournament resumed play Sunday, and the Lady Tigers came out firing. They launched themselves up the scoreboard by shooting a 5-under 283. The low score vaulted the Lady Tigers past Southeastern Conference rivals Alabama, Georgia and Vanderbilt.
Teachman and McChrystal continued their strong play on Sunday, shooting 69 and 71, respectively, which put them both under par for the tournament. Teachman’s effort was good enough to tie her for seventh place in the individual tournament.
The Lady Tigers have a three-week break before heading back to Tennessee for the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate on Oct. 16.
The LSU men’s golf team was led to a fourth-place standing by junior Andrew Loupe in the opening round of the Ping/Golfweek Invitational Sunday at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
The Tigers shot an 11-over 299 on the first day of the 36-hole event, and are nine shots behind tournament leader Oklahoma State, the No. 2 team in the country. The Cowboys shot 290 as a team.
Loupe fired an opening round 73 to lead the Tigers. Loupe was backed up by junior John Peterson and senior Brent Blaum, who both shot 75 on the day. Sophomore Sang Yi rounded out the Tigers efforts with a 76.
The second round of the tournament begins Monday at 10 a.m.
