With a solid month of play under their belt, it’s time to see what the lady tigers volleyball team is all about this season.
The team has won the SEC West title every since 2005. While that feat may be something to cheer about, if you look at the rafters you’ll notice the team hasn’t won the overall sec title since 1991.
Led by seniors Brittnee Cooper and Sam Dabbs, the Lady Tigers are looking to get over that hump and bring the title home to the bayou.
“This is the year. We have a solid defensive team,” said senior middle back, Brittnee Cooper. “We’re working on defense everyday, trying to get better. The better your defense is the better the team is.”
“This year were going out there, we want the SEC title. We’re tired of the West… like you said, it’s been a long time since we’ve taken the entire title for the West and East and we want it this year,” said senior setter, Sam Dabbs. “So we’re hungry for it and it’s been a while. We’re tired of Florida keep getting it so we’re coming out strong this year and hoping to get that SEC title.”
As the season progresses, the Lady Tigers will look to their seniors to help them overcome tough opponents and finish games.
Two weeks ago in the Tiger Classic, LSU let Nebraska slip away with a 3-2 victory, but also found some positives to look forward too in the rest of the season”
“We we’re really inconsistent, like sometimes we’ll be good and sometimes we’ll be just really bad,” said Cooper. “We’re trying to develop that consistency through practices.”
“We had some pretty good teams like Nebraska this weekend, Stanford last weekend, Tulane is not bad itself so I think that’s going to help is prepare very good for SEC,” said Marina Skender, senior outside hitter. “I don’t think we played our best but it’s only preseason.”
Even after the seniors leave, the Lady Tigers feel that there is no need to worry about the future with juniors Brittney Johnbson and Angela Bensend and a good crop of freshman like Madie Jones. They look to continue this current success for years to come.
The tigers went six and three in exhibition play this year.
