A late goal from junior forward Jessica McDonald lifted No. 1 North Carolina past LSU, 1-0, on Friday at the Duke Nike Classic.
McDonald gave the Tar Heels (7-0) the winning goal in the 78th minute when she headed in a left-side cross for her fourth goal of the season, making her the team’s leading scorer.
The Tigers (4-1-2) managed just two shots on goal to North Carolina’s six but are one of just three teams this season, along with UNC Greensboro and Marquette, to stay within one goal of the Tar Heels.
LSU has a chance to regroup Sunday in the fourth game of the Duke Nike Classic when they play Duke, who plays Auburn at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
