SPORTS SHOWTIME STAFF
Students may choose to take a break for the summer.
But for some LSU student athletes, those three months bring even more competition and training.
Here’s what you may have missed this summer in LSU athletics:
LSU men’s head basketball coach Trent Johnson was one of four Boise State alums to receive the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award at this year’s Presidential Alumni Recognition Gala on October 2, 2009.
Johnson graduated from Boise State in 1986 with a degree in physical education and played basketball for the Broncos from 1974 to 1978.
LSU senior Tasmin Mitchell was named to the Wooden Award preseason top fifty.
The list includes the top fifty players in college basketball, based on last year’s individual performances, are the front runners for the John R. Wooden All-American team and Player of the Year award.
L-s-u fan favorite Trindon Holliday scorched the track this past June, winning the hundred meter dash at the NCAA outdoor championships.
Holliday ran the dash in ten seconds flat and now joins the likes of Xavier Carter and Richard Thompson who also brought home the title for LSU in 2006 and 2008 respectively.
Finally, former LSU gymnast Ashleigh Clare-Kearney is one of thirty finalists for NCAA Woman of the Year.
The thirty finalists will be narrowed down to nine in September and the winner will be selected on October 18th.
Clare-Kearney became the first LSU gymnast to win two individual titles when she finished first in vault and on floor in April at the NCAA championships.
