The Tigers showed no rust from their five set loss to No. 6 Nebraska last night, as they took care of business on Saturday at the Tiger Classic, sweeping both Tulane and UL-Lafayette, 3-0. In the night match against Tulane, the Tigers took care of business on the offensive end, hitting .375 as a team for the match, led by senior outside hitter Marina Skender’s 15 kills. ”I’m real excited about our offense,” said LSU volleyball coach Fran Flory. “We talked about trying to manufacture more kills offensively and not give away errors, and we’ve been fairly efficient, but we haven’t been putting the ball on the floor. To have 47 kills in a three-set match is a nice improvement.” The first set saw the Green Wave leading virtually the entire time until the Tigers went on a 4-0 run with the score at 21-22 in favor of Tulane to take the set. The Tigers dominated the second set, 25-16, and took the final set, 25-21. BREAKFAST AT THE PMACIn the first match of the day during “breakfast at the PMAC,” the Tigers bounced back from their five set loss to No. 6 Nebraska by defeating UL-Lafayette, 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-23). Flory said after the Nebraska match she would use some backups to give the starters a rest, and she made good on her word, starting junior outside hitter Angela Bensend and junior middle blocker Tania Schatow. The pair made good on their start, combining for 14 kills and three block assists. ”We played some different people today who got some experience,” Flory said. “Tania Schatow and Angela Bensend started on the outside and did a very nice job of managing.” Cooper led the Tigers with 13 kills on a .632 hitting percentage. ”Brittnee Cooper, once again, was a force. She is awfully good right now and we need to keep giving her opportunities,” Flory said. A 14-4 run in the middle of the first set sparked the Tigers to a 25-15 set victory, while a 12-4 run propelled LSU to a second set victory. UL-Lafayette controlled the beginning of the third set before LSU came back to tie the score at 17 before eventually taking the set behind a strong performance from Cooper. —-Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
