Salsa dancing, chili verde and Hispanic artifacts were all a part of Tuesday’s Hispanic Cultural Showcase in Free Speech Plaza.
“The Hispanic Cultural Showcase is a presentation of what we’re about,” said Michelle Colon, the president of the Hispanic Student Cultural Society and interior design sophomore.
Daniel Toro, treasurer of the society and finance sophomore, said he hoped the event would recruit new members.
“We’re growing every day,” Colon said. “So far we have 18 members.”
The Hispanic Cultural Society began in Fall 2008 and was an official University organization in Spring 2009, she said.
“LSU didn’t have a group and there is such a massive Hispanic population here,” Colon said.
The group is open to non-Hispanic students as well. Requirements include good standing with the University and a 2.5 grade point average.
The group also tutors students throughout the week, she said.
Cerise Edmonds, cross-coordinator of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, hopes the event can educate students about the University’s diversity.
“All cultures have traditions and experiences of their own, but there are similarities across cultures and we would like everyone to be able to make some sort of connection,” she said.
