(CNN)– After more than three years in the anchor chair, Charlie Gibson is leaving ABC’s World News.
Gibson began anchoring in 2006 when the show was called ABC world news tonight.
“Good Morning America” host Diane Sawyer will take over.
She’ll become the second woman to permanently anchor solo on a network evening newscast after Katie Couric of CBS Evening News.
Gibson plans to stay on board with a-b-c part time.
Sawyer will take on the role starting in January.
