The LSU football team defeated Vanderbilt and won its 31st consecutive Saturday night game in Tiger Stadium behind the play of quarterback Jordan Jefferson as he went 20 of 29 with 138 yards. Jefferson’s ability to scramble led to many missed opportunities for the Vanderbilt defense.
“We can throw it,” said head coach Les Miles. “I like our throwing game, and I like the fact that Jordan Jefferson is on the money. He knows what he’s doing with the ball and reads it well. I’ll take him. I like him at quarterback.”
Running back Keiland Williams exploited the Vandy run defense for two touchdowns and 72 yards, while Charles Scott lined up at fullback in the I-formation and pounded the ball up the middle for 49 yards.
“We’re really still trying to feel out our offense,” said Scott. “We’re trying to get a true identity of who is the LSU offense, what are they known for and what do they do best.”
Freshman quarterback Russell Shepard made his debut as a Tiger and added the wow-factor to the offense after averaging nine yards per run. Although he did cough up the ball for a fumble after receiving a pass, his play was very impressive against a SEC defense.
“He’s like dynamite. You put him in there and lite him up, and there ain’t no telling what you’re gonna see,” said Scott. “He made a lot of big plays tonight. We expect to see more big plays from him in the future.”
The Tigers’ offense will look to improve on driving the ball downfield and converting 3rd downs next week versus UL Lafayette in Tiger Stadium.
