NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The beer and oompa music are flowing to a different beat this year at what may be the last Oktoberfest at the Deutsches Haus.
The remnant of New Orleans’ German culture is expected to be demolished to make way for a $2 billion medical complex billed as a centerpiece of the Hurricane Katrina recovery.
At the Deutsches Haus there’s a different point of view.
Frieda Arwe in German-accented English calls it a land grab, and it doesn’t benefit anybody but the politicians in Baton Rouge.
About 70 acres would be cleared for the project, including the Haus, which has operated as a gathering place and club for families with German roots since 1928.
