It’s a typical Sunday morning during football season. The campus is quiet, deserted and scattered with the remains of the past days tailgates. While students are sleeping off Saturday’s post game party, Facility Services is busy cleaning the campus.
Every Sunday during football season Facility Services and Landscape Services coordinate a cleanup group to clean the inside of Tiger Stadium and around campus.
The group is made up of Facility Services personnel, inmates, contracted labor and some volunteers. According to Paul Favaloro, director of Facility Services, the group usually consists of around 130 people.
The group starts extremely early Sunday morning and can go late into the afternoon.
“Depending on the condition of the campus and the amount of debris it typically takes eight to 12 hours,” Favaloro said.
This Sunday things were slowed down by the rain.
“The rain is always an issue, but we continue like normal with cleanup,” Favaloro said. “It may have slowed us down a bit because of the ground being softer but we still got it done.”
With thousands of people on campus there is bound to be a lot of trash produced. According to the 2008 football refuse statistics, on average there was 49.52 tons of trash thrown away and 3.4 tons of recycling per home game. The trash is taken to City Parish landfill in Baker and the recycling is taken to the recycling foundation on Tom drive.
Each game day Facility Services sets up about 3,000 to 4,000 trashcans and 800 to 1,000 recycling bins around campus. They also distribute trash bags to tailgaters.
“We have the greatest students and fans in the world and we certainly want to make game day an exciting event,” Favaloro said. “We would ask them to keep in mind that this is their campus and to be respectful of the grounds and facilities.”
Favaloro said there are ways students can help keep the mess under control.
Fans should be mindful not to litter and should keep from using glass containers. They should also use designated restroom facilities such as the port-a-lets and should only go in buildings that are open to the public on game days.
