The No. 11 LSU women’s golf team secured a spot in the championship match of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship on Monday with a 3-2 upset victory over Florida at the Legends Course of LPGA International at Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Lady Tigers knocked off the Gators, who were the No. 1 seed in the tournament, with the help of freshman Mary Michael Maggio.
Maggio continued her impressive first weekend as a collegiate golfer, securing the match for LSU with 1-up decision over Amelia Lewis.
Maggio and Lewis entered the 18th hole tied, but a double-bogey but Lewis gave the Lady Tigers a berth in the finals Tuesday against Auburn.
LSU won its other two points when sophomore Jacqueline Hedwall knocked off Evan Jensen 2 and 1, and junior Megan McChrystal had a 1-up victory over Marika Lendl.
The championship match with Auburn marks the first time there is an All-Southeastern Conference final in the seven-year history of the event.
