The LSU women’s golf team, led by sophomore Jacqueline Hedwall and freshman Mary Michael Maggio finished tied for third in the opening round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Lady Tigers shot a 299 in the first round, but bounced back with a 291 in the second round to advance to the championship bracket of match play, which is set to begin tomorrow.
LSU finish tied with Auburn with a 36-hole stroke total of 14-over par 590.
Florida leads the field with a 9-over 585.
Hedwall, who is tied for third, shot an even par, leaving her two shots behind Auburn’s Cydney Clanton for the lead.
Maggio fired a 1-over 145, knotting her in a five-way tie for eighth place in her first career action for the Lady Tigers.
LSU’s top returning golfer Megan McChrystal struggled in the first 18 holes, shooting an 80, but bounced back with a 71 over the final 18 to finish tied for 29th with a 7-over 151.
The top eight teams from today’s stroke play will compete in several matches tomorrow and the team that wins three of the five matches will be crowned champion.
