Winnebago County, Ill. (CNN)—A woman charged with leaving a newborn to freeze on a roadway five years ago was due in court Monday but the hearing was delayed.
Investigators are now looking into whether remains of two infants found her impounded car last week are any relation to her.
First deputy public defender David Doll reassigned himself to Katie Stockton’s probation case just three days ago.
Today in court, he wanted more time.
“I asked the judge to continue this case long enough so that I could discuss just this particular case,” said David Doll, First Deputy Public Defender. “The petition to vacate probation with Ms. Stockton.”
A judge moved the hearing to September third. That’s also the date another judge will take-up Doll’s second request: consolidate this case with the murder charges.
In court, Doll said it would be the best use of resources but didn’t expand on that.
“I want to leave all my arguments for the court. I prefer not to litigate in the public because the appropriate forum in my mind is the court,” said Doll.
“I think we see them as separate matters but we’ll respect the decision of the court as to whether or not they should be consolidated,” said Joe Bruscato, Winnebago County State’s Attorney.
There’s still the possibility Stockton could face even more charges. Last week, police announced they found the skeletal remains of two babies in Stockton’s impounded car.
“At this point in time the investigation continues. The process sits predominantly with the coroner’s office who will conduct their investigation.”
Autopsies are being conducted on the remains Tuesday.
Investigators are looking into whether there is a link between the remains and Stockton.
