According to NFL.com, former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell was named the Oakland Raiders starting quarterback on Monday, beating out veteran Jeff Garcia.
Raiders coach Tom Cable said Russell’s progression and a calf injury sustained by Garcia made the decision a no-brainer.« Redemption for some QBs, condemnation for othersObservations from a weekend of football »
“I think we’re fortunate he’s getting better,” Cable said. “He’s progressing the way you want him to. Not perfect yet. I’d say, at this point, he’s the quarterback of the Oakland Raiders.”
Russell is entering his third season in Oakland after being the first pick of the 2007 NFL Draft.
The former LSU standout ranks No. 2 in school history in touchdown passes with 52 and third in passing yards with 6,625.
