A pair of Tiger seniors led the way for the LSU soccer team (1-1) in the team’s 3-0 win over Southern Miss (1-2) on Friday night at the LSU Soccer Complex.
Seniors Melissa Clarke and Rachel Yepez hooked up for the first goal of the night as Clarke took a cross from Yepez and put it in the upper left corner of the net in the 40th minute.
But the Tigers veteran duo wasn’t finished.
Clarke recorded an assist in an 82nd minute goal by senior midfielder Malorie Rutledge and Yepez tacked on a third goal minutes later to seal the deal for the Tigers.
LSU’s defense was solid not surrendering a single shot on goal, although it didn’t need to do much as the ball was mainly in Southern Miss territory.
LSU coach Brian Lee said he was pleased with the team’s progress after an opening game loss against Memphis last week.
“We finally got a couple goals in the end,” Lee said. “It’s a big step forward from last week because we defended better, but we can do so much more.”
