The No. 25 LSU soccer team cracked the preseason national rankings for the first time ever last week — but Memphis didn’t care.
Memphis pummeled LSU, 2-0, not surrendering a single shot on goal the entire game in the upset win.
With the stands filled, LSU failed to impress in its home opener against the two-time defending Conference USA Champion.
Memphis notched the first goal with a bullet sent from 20 yards out by Vendula Strnadova – a member of the Czech Republic national team — in the 17th minute.
Memphis didn’t look back as it doubled its lead in the 24th minute.
LSU coach Brian Lee said Memphis played with midseason or postseason effort while LSU played in preseason form.
“We’ve got to upgrade our effort. It just wasn’t there to start the game,” Lee said. “But full credit to Memphis, I thought they came out and played really hard.”
Friday night marked LSU’s first home opening loss since 1997.
