BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A debate is shaping up in Baton Rouge over the role of religion in science classes.
It’s a follow-up to last year’s legislative debate over a bill that allows local schools to supplement state-approved science textbooks with materials that proponents say will promote “critical thinking” about evolution and other scientific topics.
Opponents of that bill have said it’s a way of sneaking religion into science classes.
On Tuesday, the issue goes before a committee of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The panel is to discuss a draft of guidelines for implementing the new law.
