The LSU men’s and women’s tennis teams advanced at the ITA Kick-Off Weekends on Saturday.
The No. 24 Lady Tigers shut out DePaul, 4-0, in Los Angeles to advance to Sunday’s second round.
“We struggled a little bit with doubles play,” said senior Megan Falcon. “But after that everyone going to singles felt pretty confident.”
The Lady Tigers were led by Falcon, who defeated DePaul senior Dunja Antunovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.
“I had a slow start, but I was able to pick up momentum as the match progressed,” said Falcon, the No. 5 women’s player in the nation.
The No. 16 men traveled to Tulsa and defeated No. 20 Texas Tech 4-3 in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Tigers were led by the No. 2 player in the nation, Michael Venus, who defeated No. 19 Raony Carvalho, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
“I should have won the second set. I had match points in it, and I gave it up,” Venus said. “It was good to come back.”
The men play the winner of the match between No. 30 Notre Dame and No. 12 Tulsa on Sunday.
“Both of the guys from Notre Dame or Tulsa, whoever wins, are good,” Venus said. “So I’m definitely going to have to play well tomorrow.”
The Lady Tigers play the winner of the match between No. 3 UCLA and Minnesota on Sunday. The winner of Sunday’s match will advance to the 16-team ITA National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc., on Feb. 13.
