LSU Police Department officials arrested two men last week for unrelated burglaries that happened in Evangeline Hall, according to LSUPD officials. During the annual Banker’s Association Conference hosted at the University, one of the people attending had their laptop stolen from his room in Evangeline Hall, said LSUPD spokesman Maj. Lawrence Rabalais. The man reported his laptop to LSUPD May 18 and after investigation LSUPD officials arrested a University custodian, William James, Rabalais said. After questioning, James admitted he stole the laptop, Rabalais said. Several workers also reported seeing James enter two rooms and steal laptops previous to the May 18 incident. None of the laptops were recovered, he said. James was arrested and booked in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for simple burglary. The second arrest was made June 6, after a report was filed on June 3 for three stolen iPods from Evangeline Hall during a summer camp hosted at the University, Rabalais said. LSUPD arrested a University construction worker Jeremy Gatewood after a warrant was filed for his arrest, Rabalais said. A Livingston Parish deputy arrested Gatewood, and after searching his vehicle found an iPod, Rabalais said. Gatewood said he found the iPod on the University campus. After contacting LSUPD, officials were able to get a search warrant and located the other two iPod’s at his home. It’s unfortunate that both burglaries were made by University employees, Rabalais said. But the incidents were unrelated, and Evangeline Hall is a secure building, he said.
