With the legislative session coming to a close Thursday night, Chancellor Michael Martin sent a budget update to faculty, staff and students Monday morning — letting them know the University is waiting for specific budget cut numbers before moving forward.
Martin said the Legislature will be cutting about $120 million from public colleges and universities for the fiscal year that begins Wednesday. The original cut was proposed to be $219 million.
“The Legislature has allowed us to avoid the “worst case scenario” and for this we are grateful,” Martin said in the e-mail. “Still, we will be required to make significant adjustments in the way we meet the mission and conduct the business of LSU.”
Martin said while the University is busy planning for next year’s budget, LSU must also prepare for the next couple of years — where budgetary problems may worsen once federal stimulus dollars run out. —-Contact Kyle Bove at [email protected]
