BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal has set a special March 27 election on the question of whether Wilson Mayor Joshua L. Thomas should be recalled.
The proclamation notes 175 qualified voters of the East Feliciana Parish village signed the recall petition circulated during August, September and October.
That’s more than the minimum number of registered voters 40 percent of the village’s 415 registered voters, or 166 needed to sign the petition to trigger the recall election, the petition says.
The state Attorney General’s Office issued an opinion saying the recall petition met the requirements of state law.
Voters will have the option of voting “for” or “against” the recall.
Thomas, 25, took office July 1 after winning the post in the spring elections.
If a majority of the voters participating in the March 27 election favor recalling Thomas, another special election would be needed to choose his successor.
He would be allowed to run in that special election.
Backers of the petition drive claim Thomas will not work with the village’s Board of Aldermen and fired valuable municipal employees shortly after taking office.
Thomas denied the allegations, saying he found no checks and balances in the village’s operations when he took office and he is providing the board with the necessary financial information.
