Urban Meyer will step down as head coach at Florida, according to a news release from Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley.
Meyer cited health reasons for his resignation.
“I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years, and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program,” Meyer said in the release. “I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to reevaluate my priorities of faith and family.”
“After consulting with my family, [Florida president] Dr. [James Bernard] Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family.”
Meyer won two BCS national championships in three years in his five-year tenure in Gainesville, Fla. His record at Florida is 56-10, including a 32-8 mark in Southeastern Conference games.
Meyer has a 95-18 record in nine seasons as a head coach. He previously coached at Bowling Green and Utah before taking the Florida job in 2005.
Meyer had a 3-2 record against LSU, with both losses coming in Tiger Stadium.
