The BUKU Music + Art Project, founded in 2012, kicked off last night. With six stages and over 60 performers, this year’s festival was sure to be a hit.
Chet Porter, Minnesota B2B Space Jesus, Slushii, Lil Dicky, 21 Savage and deadmau5 are among some of the names gracing the BUKU stages.
Slushii took to the Float Den stage at 7:15 p.m. Friday, engaging the audience with an exciting EDM performance.
The music producer and DJ, born as Julian Scanlan, appeals to many college-aged festival-goers because he’s their own age at a mere 19 years old.
Not only did Slushii appear on time for his performance, his visuals added something extra to the experience.
“Slushii brought the visuals, bass and the vibe tonight,” 28-year-old Caleb Stutznab said. “The crowd got super rowdy to it.”
The visuals fell in line with the music and it was something you didn’t know the show needed until it was onscreen.
The strobe lights gave a camera-like illusion to your life. Each moment appeared in what seemed like a camera shot. If was as if each beat drop was a picture.
The crowd was completely one with the music and it was incredible to watch. Many have said that BUKU is supposed to be a euphoric experience and this show definitely lived up to expectations.
One female festival-goer was dressed as a unicorn, standing amid four girls dressed in all black. It was such an accepting environment no matter how costumed, clothed or unclothed crowd-goers chose to be.
After his set, Slushii tweeted out a picture of himself with his crowd, with the caption “The energy was crazy tonight! [Love] u BUKU.”
Slushii produces everything from trap to drum to bass. He was a part of the psychedelic power pop band, Deuteronomy, from 2009-12 and released his debut album with them.
He entered the EDM world in 2013 under his former alias DJ Swoon and made up half of the Monsters with Tiny Mustaches duo with his partner MHKAZ.
His first single, “Emptiness” was released April 20 of last year by the Canadian label Monstercat. He self-released his debut EP “Brain Freeze” the following month.
Slushii has released eight of his own singles, but is also known for his many remixes, including “Closer,” originally by The Chainsmokers, “Never Forget You,” originally by Zara Larsson and MNEK and “Summit,” originally by Skrillex featuring Ellie Goulding.
