For the first time in school history, LSU won the SEC regular season title.
In front of 12,609 people, the third-largest crowd in school history, the LSU Tigers defeated the Florida Gators by a final score of 198.150-196.600. It was the highest score this season and the third-highest score in program history.
Sunday marks the third time overall that LSU has won the regular season title, but this is the first time the conference recognizes and awards the champion of the regular season.
“There’s a tremendous amount of gratification and satisfaction in a job well done because it’s not based on one night it’s based on your entire body of work, and this teams body of work has been superlative,” Head Coach D-D Breaux said after the win.
The Tigers made a statement early on the vault and never looked back. Senior Ashleigh Gnat scored her second perfect 10.000 this season, and the eighth of her career.
“Trying to stay and do the same thing that I do in practice every single day. I think that our lineup ahead of me was incredible. Those are the vaults that set you up, and it’s an honor to be able to cap off that position.” Gnat said about her Vault.
The Tigers didn’t seem too intimidated by the second-ranked team in the country.
“We know how to rally, it starts with that first vault and ends with Bugs on the floor” sophomore McKenna Kelley said about the Gators.
“We’re definitely not thinking about the other team and that’s kind of our goal as we get out on the floor, is to be so in-tune with what we’re doing that we’re drowning everything else out.” said Gnat.
With the win today the Tigers are now 12-1 on the season and 7-0 overall in the SEC. It was also the team’s 27th consecutive win inside the PMAC.
The Tigers final regular season meet is this Friday night against New Hampshire at 7:30. Friday night will also be the last time seniors Ashleigh Gnat, Sarah Finnegan, and Shae Zamardi compete in the PMAC.
