“Diversity is good for everyone” is the motto for the LSU community.
The Tigers took another step toward building an even stronger community with their new LGBTQ Resource Room, located in the LSU Women’s Center.
“It’s safe, welcoming, educational, warm, and available. That’s home,” LSU senior and QROMA President Jonathan Brown said. “The purpose is to build community, to provide a safe space, and to educate those who want to know more about our community.”
Inside the room are decorations and resources that help students educate themselves about the community. LSU encourages students to visit the resource room to learn more about LGBTQ, and to help create more acceptance and diversity in the broader community.
“The Office of Diversity, Dr. Riveres, the Provost, even up to the President’s office really wanted this space to happen; and they pushed for it,” assistant director of LSU’s Office of Multicultural Affairs Wes Heath said.
Students and faculty say the LGBTQ resource room is a small step, but also a groundbreaking step. It is another step toward a more educated, welcoming, and diverse LSU community.
“It’s not about your sexuality. It’s about your willingness to create a home on our campus. We have to represent one another. We all [are] Tigers; our stripes are just different colors,” Brown said.
Students and faculty look forward to the space evolving into a larger, more permanent space on LSU’s campus. Donations are being accepted to add to the room.
“These donations may include money and other items such as books and even fun puzzles,” Brown said.
Heath said an Amazon Wish List is also available to see what students are interested in adding to the room.
