Jesuit priests sold 272 slaves to Louisiana plantation owners in 1838 to help fund a church mission called Georgetown University. Over the weekend, descendants of the GU272 met in Maringouin, LA to discuss potential reparations and record family histories.
Some of the relatives were unaware their neighbors in the small town were actually relatives. Older descendants formally recorded oral family histories with LSU honors students who are studying the slave trade’s connection to Georgetown.
Descendants said they’d like to see Georgetown erect monuments and endow scholarships in the family’s name as steps toward reparation.
