Run the Jewels, who performed Saturday at BUKU Music + Art Project, left an impression on the audience for more than just their stage presence.
The rappers appeared right on time and began their show by saying how grateful they were to be performing at BUKU.
“We’re going to do everything in our power to make tonight a blockbuster kind of night,” rapper El-P said.
EI-P, born as Jaime Meline, dedicated one of his songs to his fiancé. Michael Render, better known by his stage name Killer Mike, dedicated that same song to his recently engaged friends.
It’s that attitude that really strikes a feeling of respect for an artist.
“I felt that they were quite humble for the crowd following that they have,” Ryan Theriot said. “Their crowd presence quickly showed why people love to see them perform.”
Throughout their set, the rappers called out different members of the crowd. One male festival-goer was on his friend’s shoulders and Killer Mike shouted them out, recognizing them for their excitement and positive attitude. Their reactions were priceless and created an electric energy in the crowd.
The hip-hop supergroup formed in 2013. They have released three studio albums and in the fall, will be touring North America for the Jewel Runner Tour. They also released a remix album shortly after their second album. All of the proceeds from this album were donated to charity.
The duo has also performed at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
