Small business is booming in Baton Rouge, so much that restaurant chain Mooyah is adding a second store close to LSU. The restaurant chain that got its start in Plaino Texas is planning to expand its operations to open a new store on Lee Dr.
The reason for the expansion comes from how Baton Rouge has made Mooyah a household name, says Charles Kerr, franchisee and operator of the Baton Rouge Mooyah location.
“The Lee Dr. location has such a good proximity to LSU as well as Baton Rouge Residents,” says Kerr.
Kerr also says that the Baton Rouge location is “the most successful Mooyah in the country,” and that expanding to a college audience is the next logical step.
Mooyah isn’t the only successful quick service restaurant in Baton Rouge as a swell of new business is making Baton Rouge a more attractive place for small business. According to QSR magazine,an industry trade publication, Baton Rouge is listed as “one of its top 15 small cities for growth in the sector in 2017.”
Much of this success can be attributed to the “small town feel of Baton Rouge,” says Dr. Jim Richardson, LSU economics and public administration professor.
These types of “small businesses cater to individuals and small groups of people,” says Richardson.
Richardson says that small businesses are important for interaction within the community and Baton Rouge’s community appeals to a particular type of quick service restaurant, like Mooyah.
One thing is certain however. LSU students are going to get more options for lunch very soon.
