Designs for a new indoor practice facility at Tiger Park were approved by the Board of Supervisors in a meeting on March 17.
The initial project was approved by the Board in September, when the documents stated the project would be fully funded by the Athletic Department and will cost an estimated $4.4 million.
The 13,600 square foot facility will feature approximately five batting cages, an infield practice area and a weight and conditioning room.
Gated gameday restrooms with an outside entrance for fans will be connected to the facility on the opposite side of the weight room.
Also included in the project are an additional 500 bleacher seats that will be placed in right center field and a parking lot for SEC Network trucks for both softball and soccer fields.
The building will be located behind the existing scoreboard, and the road circling Tiger Park will be realigned to accommodate the new facility.
According to the documents released in September, the new facility promotes the intentions of Title IX federal requirements.
Since the latest Tiger Park opened in 2009, the Tigers’ home record has been 228-59 with only one season losing double digit games at home.
Tiger Park was also named the No. 1 softball stadium in the country by flosoftball.com in 2016.
In 2016, a program record average of 1,877 fans attended the games with a total attendance of 75,094.
The project is still in its schematic design phase, and no further information has been released by the University.
