In its final game of the weekend, LSU continued its strong offensive play as the Tigers swept Wichita State, winning 9-2.
Freshman pitcher Eric Walker earned his third start of the season and had an up and down day for the Tigers.
After two quick outs to begin the game, Walker proceeded to walk the next two batters but was able to escape the inning unscathed.
The Tigers started offensively as LSU quickly scored two runs with a single from sophomore left fielder Antoine Duplantis.
Four batters later, designated hitter Chris Reid came to the plate with bases loaded and delivered an infield single that scored Duplantis to extend the lead to 3-0 after one frame.
Through three innings Walker (2-0) was able to stand five runners on base with four of them in scoring position.
LSU added to its lead in the third with an RBI double by freshman first baseman Jake Slaughter that scored fellow freshman third baseman Josh Smith. An error by Wichita State would bring home Slaughter two batters later, giving LSU a 5-0 edge through three innings.
Duplantis continued his strong performance of late as he added another two-RBI single in the fourth that blew the game wide open for LSU.
The Tigers scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, which was able to bring home a run and senior shortstop Kramer Robertson scored on a error Wichita State to extend the lead to 9-0.
While Walker pitched effectively, he did have to rely heavily on the defense as he finished the day with only two strikeouts.
Walker was replaced by junior pitcher Austin Bain in the seventh inning, finishing the day with no earned runs on three hits and three strikeouts but did walk two and hit two batters.
Duplantis finished the day batting 2-for-5 with four RBIs on the day and senior second baseman Cole Freeman extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Closer Hunter Newman was sent out in the ninth to finish the Shockers off and struck out two batters and didn’t allow a run.
LSU will next face Louisiana College on Tuesday as the replacement game for University of San Diego at 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium.
