It was 15 games…
The LSU Tigers basketball team had gone 600 minutes on the court without winning a game.
“Nobody wants to go through what we’ve been through,” said LSU head coach Johnny Jones.
January 4, 2017 was the last time the LSU had won a game. Over the past several weeks fans began to wonder if the team would get another win this season.
However, against Tennessee on Wednesday night, the Tigers could do no wrong.
The LSU Tigers basketball team beat the Tennessee Volunteers 92-82 in the Pet Maravich Assembly Center. It was the first time the Tigers won a home game in 2017. Their last home win was on December 19, 2016 against the College of Charleston.
“They were rewarded tonight because they chose not to quit,” Jones said. “They chose not to give up. They competed.”
LSU played good defense the entire night, something that’s plagued them all season. They also got good shooting performances, particularly from juniors Jalyn Patterson and Brandon Sampson. Sampson finished the night with 24 points, while Patterson finished with 22. Patterson’s 22 points were the most he’s had in one game at LSU.
The win was little more than a moral victory for the Tigers, though. With a 10-19 record (2-15 in the SEC), they are virtually a lock to miss the NCAA Tournament.
But that doesn’t matter to this team. This win was for themselves.
“We haven’t gotten a win in a little while,” Patterson said. “Everybody was happy…everybody was smiling. It was a totally different locker room.”
For the entire team, but especially Jones, it’s been a long two months. It’s no secret that most people believe he’s coaching on borrowed time. The Tigers failed to make the NCAA Tournament last season with No. 1 NBA draft pick Ben Simmons. With a losing record, many people believe he’s locked in to be replaced when the season is over.
But even with rumors of his job security looming over his head, Jones managed to crack a smile from the bench when the Tigers were about to secure victory.
“If you saw a smile it was real,” Jones said.
LSU will travel to Starkville to play Mississippi State on Saturday in their final regular season game of 2016-2017 season.
