Popular Atlanta rapper Future released his sixth studio album “HNDRXX” on Feb. 24 to critical acclaim and a No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200.
STARS: 3/5
The project boasts 17 new tracks, with features from chart toppers like The Weeknd and Rihanna. Future seems more down-to-earth, reflective and genuine on this album, while still bringing in his noteworthy beats and autotuned raps.
The first track, “My Collection,”provides a mellow interlude into the rest of the rhythmic, beat-heavy album.
“Come Out Strong” definitely comes out strong as one of the album’s best hits. This is mostly due to The Weeknd’s infectious vocals, which seem to make any song he is involved with a hit. This one is sure to be overplayed on many radio stations in the coming weeks.
Those familiar with Future’s sound might recognize most sounds on this album. Unfortunately, that is one of the main issues I have with this most recent work.
Even though Future has rightfully earned his spot as an industry heavyweight with his catchy bars, good beats and impressive discography, many of his songs blend into the next with no real distinction.
Future recorded a lot of “HNDRXX” tracks with similarities to his other works. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it leaves fans and regular rap listeners wanting a little more. “Lookin Exotic,” “Testify” and “Hallucinating” are all examples of orthodox Future songs that have quality and a good hook, but little variety.
However, it doesn’t all sound repetitive. “Incredible” has a distinct island sound and feel to it, which makes listeners want to dance, no matter where they are. “Turn On Me,” another track with an interesting twist, sets itself apart from the rest of the album and another “typical” Future song.
Rihanna appears on “Selfish” and steals the show with her dreamy and powerful vocals. Like The Weeknd, Rihanna owns every song she is featured on, regardless of what artist is actually behind them. “Selfish” is sure to take over airwaves for the foreseeable future as well, and rightfully so.
Some of my “HNDRXX” favorites are “Solo,” “Fresh Air” and “I Thank U.” Future never lets us forget why he is constantly producing hit after hit.
The trap feel, superb beats and melodic, yet hard rap style keeps us coming back for more every time. There’s no questioning why Future is included in every club, party or radio playlist. This time, he delivers a more rhythmic, authentic performance, and we can only hope to see it improve from here.
