The Tigers took to the mound on Tuesday to face the Lamar Cardinals.
It was the Cardinals who soared right out of the gate when right fielder Cutter McDowell sent the first pitch of the game over the wall for a home run. That put the Cardinals up 1-0.
Before the Tigers could even the respond, the game was sent into an hour-long rain delay. But once the rain washed away, so did Lamar’s lead.
The Tigers racked up six runs in the second inning thanks in part to first baseman Nick Coomes, who hit his first homerun of the season.
“We’ve been waiting for Coomes to show that power,” LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri said. “I knew he had it. He hit I think 13 home runs last year in Junior College.”
“It’s nice to finally get on the board in that column,” Coomes said.
The Tigers didn’t look back from there, winning 10-4.
“If you had told me early in the game that we were gonna hold them to four runs I woulda told you your probably gonna be wrong about that because they were a scary, scary lineup,” Mainieri said. “I’m happy we got the win.”
The Tigers got a big win, but unfortunately for LSU fans, the Tigers won’t be back in Alex Box Stadium for nearly 3 weeks. They start a seven-game road trip on Friday when they face the Kentucky Wildcats.
“This is the tough part of our schedule,” Mainieri said. “We gotta be the road warriors now.”
With the win, the Tigers improved to 26-12 on the year.
