Kendrick Lamar’s latest single “HUMBLE.” was released March 30 and has received a great response from fans.
STARS: 4/5
Produced by Mike WiLL Made-It, the tone of “HUMBLE.” is built on piano keys and bass. The chorus of the song, “Sit down, be humble,” is catchy and easy to rap along to. “HUMBLE.” is the lead single on Lamar’s upcoming album “Damn.”
The single debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Lamar’s highest ranking track yet. ESPN recently announced they will be using the song in their coverage of the 2017 NBA Playoffs. The song is currently featured in a promotional video for ESPN and has already been played during several games.
“HUMBLE.” shifts constantly from the retelling of his roots to conquering the rap world, which gets a little confusing. But with his catchy words and relatable references, Lamar manages to pull off the flip-flop of his verses.
Lamar raps, “I blew cool from AC, ayy, Obama just paged me, ayy,” referencing former President Barack Obama giving him the prestige he deserves. He then jumps to rapping about Kool-Aid and somehow makes it work.
Many female fans love Lamar’s ode to stretch marks. He praised the look of a natural body, especially the appearance of stretch marks. He understands that stretch marks are a natural and beautiful part of the body and even prefers them.
The meaning of “HUMBLE.” is very clear based on the title. Aside from that, he points out that even though he has supremacy in the music world, he remains modest because of his humble start.
The entire song and its meaning is ironic. He released the track in hopes that it would maybe win a few awards and that his fans would love it, yet the meaning of the song is to remain humble no matter what.
Los Angeles freelance writer Paul Thompson puts it best, “With ‘HUMBLE.’, Kendrick goes for Rap’s crown — and mocks in at the same time.”
He definitely is a well-known rapper in today’s world, but he has the right idea in mind, which is to give the world good thoughts and ideas to reflect on.
