Before LSU takes a week off for spring break, the Tigers held one last scrimmage.
LSU coach Ed Orgeron described LSU’s scrimmage as a “passing scrimmage.”
“I wanted to see us throw the football,” Orgeron said in a post-scrimmage press conference.“I wanted to see us protect, I wanted to see us rush the passer and cover.”
Orgeron said senior quarterback Danny Etling was 13-of-17 for 216 yards and three touchdowns in the scrimmage.
While the staff maintains that it is an open competition, the starting job appears to be Etling’s.
However, Orgeron still feels that the passing game is still very inconsistent, and that the running game is much more ahead.
On defense, senior safety John Battle sat out, and was replaced by freshman Grant Delpit.
“He’s done a good job,” Orgeron said about Delpit. “He’s a very good athlete, very good tackler, can make tackles in space, has an understanding of the defense, so does Jacoby Stevens. Those are two outstanding young freshman.”
“They’re big, strong, physical, and they don’t mind putting their nose in there.”
Orgeron mentioned that defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence had a big goal-line stop in the scrimmage.
Orgeron also gave an update on LSU’s spring game, and said that he wants it to be more game-like. LSU plans to have two separate teams and kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. on April 22.
Key attends scrimmage
After leaving the program for “personal reasons,” junior linebacker Arden Key was spotted at LSU’s football operations building after the Tigers’ scrimmage on Thursday.
Key, who set LSU’s single season record for sacks last season, plans to return in the summer, Orgeron said.
Orgeron offered “no comment” on Key’s status on how soon he would return to the team.
However, Key tweeted “255 & ready!” minutes after Orgeron’s post-scrimmage presser.
