There probably aren’t many people who’d disagree that our U.S. veterans need to be taken care of. Sometimes, however, the veterans aren’t sure what direction to take in life.
Sgt. Robert Pinson was one of those veterans.
“I had no purpose in life anymore,” Pinson said. “You’ve had a structural routine in your life that just diminishes completely, and now you’re on your own.”
After serving in the military, and working a few small jobs afterwards, Pinson decided to go into business for himself. He opened his company, Freedom Services, in April 2016, two years after his active duty ended.
Freedom Services is an exterior cleaning service that operates on the residential and commercial levels. But unlike you’re average pressure washing company, Pinson only hires U.S. Veterans.
“What I’m trying to do here is create a large brotherhood where we can all lean on each other, get work done, and serve the community while also serving each other.”
One of his employees is Adam Shaw, a marine from Ohio who deployed with Pinson to Afghanistan in 2012. Shaw took a job with DIRECTV shortly after getting out of the marine core, but he had some trouble adjusting to civilian life.
“I wasn’t the happiest,” Shaw said. “A corporate office isn’t really the best place for a recently separated veteran.”
Pinson asked Shaw to move to Baton Rouge in January to work for Freedom Services. Adam is now the vice president of the company, and he said it was one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
“That’s the cool thing about Freedom Services,” Shaw said. “You kind of feel like you’re back in the military [but] just enough. It’s kind of like the happy medium. You know feeling the camaraderie, but not having to wake up and run at 5 [a.m.].”
Freedom Services also donates 10 percent of its revenue to Folds of Honor. Folds of Honor is a non-profit organization that helps pay for children who’ve lost their parents in combat go to school. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible. Folds of Honor helped raise $130,000 last year.
“It definitely makes me feel a sense of honor and a sense of appreciation,” Pinson said.
Pinson said he’s felt a ton of support from the Baton Rouge community regarding his business, and he’s proud to serve a community that appreciates his work.
“The support has been unmatched in anything I’ve ever done in my life.”
Pinson also said he’s happy doing this forever.
“I will never stop until I die because this is what truly matters to me in my heart. I know it’s for a good cause. I know it’s going to work.”
Pinson said he’s working on branching Freedom Services outside of the Baton Rouge area in the future. You can get in touch with Freedom Services through their email account [email protected]
