For the second time this season, Constance Quinn delivered LSU to a victory.
Quinn’s seventh inning, her first of the season, gave LSU a walk-off victory and helped the Tigers (34-14, 9-9 Southeastern Conference) avoid getting swept against Tennessee.
“When they played ‘I’m From Louisiana,’ obviously I’m not from Louisiana, but it was a reminder of who we do it for and to loosen up a little bit and have fun,” the senior second baseman said. “We play so well when we have fun.”
Quinn also had a walk-off hit against Georgia back on March 24.
The Tigers’ 1-0 win also snapped a 20-game win streak for the Volunteers.
Junior pitcher Allie Walljasper started in the circle for the Tigers and earned her fifth shutout of the season as she held the Volunteers to only one hit which came in the second inning.
In the winning effort, Walljasper threw 95 pitches and earned four strikeouts, retiring the side in four innings.
“The two people that really stepped up today are very deserving of great performances,” coach Beth Torina said. “Allie and Connie have been continuing to push and do the right thing.”
Tennessee’s starting pitcher Caylan Arnold also kept LSU on its heels as she held the team to only two hits and retired the side in three innings and struck out six.
“You have to have the mentality when you get punched in the mouth, you stand back up and punch back,” Quinn said.
As LSU heads into the final weeks of the regular season, Torina said that the win against Tennessee was huge and the team can take a breath, but not too big.
The Tigers returns to will welcome Missouri next weekend at Tiger Park for a three-game series.
