Following consecutive weeks of series losses to Southeastern Conference opponents, LSU finally came away with a victory.
The Tigers took the won the rubber match of the series against No. 16 Arkansas on the road this weekend.
What originally looked like another rough weekend for LSU, turned out to end in its favor.
On Friday, LSU dropped the series opener after Arkansas right-hander Blaine Knight registered six scoreless innings and the Razorbacks’ lineup blasted three home runs en route to a 9-3 thumping of the Tigers.
It was the third straight time the Tigers have lost the series opener this season in SEC play.
Junior pitcher Alex Lange started on Friday, and the Razorbacks held him to only 4 ⅓ innings.
He allowed six hits, three runs, five walks, and seven strikeouts.
It appeared as if the struggles continued into Saturday for LSU.
The Tigers fell behind 8-1 at the end of the sixth inning, and senior pitcher Jared Poche’ lasted a brief 3 ⅓ innings.
LSU rallied back.
Scoring a run in the seventh, three in the eighth, and five in the ninth, the Tigers blanked the Arkansas lineup in the final three innings to come away with a 10-8 win.
Poche’ gave up nine hits, seven runs, two walks, and two strikeouts in his brief start on the mound. Senior closing pitcher Hunter Newman entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and protected LSU’s two-run lead despite giving up a hit and two walks.
Freshman pitcher Eric Walker finished things off for LSU on Sunday.
Walker threw a complete game, giving up four hits, no runs, two walks, and four strikeouts, as LSU cruised to a 2-0 series clinching victory over the Razorbacks.
The Tigers tacked on a run in the top of the second inning from an RBI double from junior catcher Nick Coomes, and then another in the eighth inning due to an RBI single from junior right fielder Greg Deichmann.
The Tigers now prepare to face UL-Lafayette on Tuesday at the Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic in Metairie at 7 p.m.
