In a game that stretched out over eight hours due to weather delays, it only took one inning to decide Game 3 of the Baton Rouge Regional for the No. 18 LSU softball team.
LSU (42-19) fell to No. 14 UL-Lafayette 4-2, but coach Beth Torina is still positive about what is to come in the tournament.
“It wasn’t too long ago,” she said. “It was 2015 where we were in this same spot and we were able to come away with the regional.”
An explosive four run fifth inning from the Ragin’ Cajuns stunned the Tiger’s offense that was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Junior pitcher Allie Walljasper earned the starting nod in the circle and struck out three while allowing seven hits.
On the other side, UL-Lafayette’s ace, Alex Stewart, was fresh off of a no-hitter from the previous day against McNeese State and also struck out three and allowed eight hits.
Immediately following the first weather delay, freshman first baseman Amanda Doyle put the Tigers on the board with a two-out double after senior catcher Sahvanna Jaquish doubled into the left center field gap.
In the bottom of the third, the Tigers pulled ahead 2-0 on a two-out RBI triple from senior outfielder Bailey Landry.
Following the conclusion of the third inning, a weather delay pushed the contest back another five hours. The total weather delay lasted approximately six hours and 29 minutes.
Walljasper retired the side to get the ball rolling after the lengthy weather delay and she only needed five pitches to do so.
With runners on the corners in the top of the fifth, sophomore shortstop Amber Serrett was unable to keep hang on to the ball resulting in a run from the Cajuns, cutting the Tigers lead to one with no outs and two runners on.
UL-Lafayette jumped ahead on a three-run home run from DJ Sanders with no outs, but Walljasper managed to work around the Cajuns offense to retire the next three batters.
The Cajuns scored four runs on three hits in the fifth inning.
“There’s one pitch we would like to have back,” Torina said. “But we believe in Allie [Walljasper] 100 percent. She did some good things. Our defense made too many mistakes and gave them too many extra opportunities to come to the plate.”
The Tigers found some sort of an offensive groove and a big opportunity to score during the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back singles from Serrett and freshman outfielder Aliyah Andrews.
A sac bunt from junior outfielder Emily Griggs moved Serrett and Andrews into scoring position, but they were unable to take advantage of the opportunity in front of them.
Walljasper worked her way out of yet another jam in the sixth leaving two runners stranded for the Cajun’s, keeping a two run deficit in tact.
A clutch performance from Walljasper as she retired the side in the top of the seventh to keep the Cajuns from adding to their lead, giving the Tigers one more opportunity to take the game into their hands, but they couldn’t deliver and went down in order.
Eight different Tigers picked up a hit in Saturday’s game.
LSU will play in the losers bracket to play Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Tiger Park.
“Everything is still right in front of them,” Torina said. “Of course we gave ourselves the harder road, but the hard is what makes this thing fun and I don’t think it’s a very good story if we just cruise through this thing.”
