LSU faculty and students are stepping away from political conversations about Donald Trump’s immigration ban. Instead, they are focusing on maintaining diversity in the LSU community.
“Diversity is about individuals; it’s not about collective stories, even though collectively we become a very diverse body,” LSU Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, Dr. Mari Fuentes-Martin, said.
LSU’s mission is to be a diverse campus, where students can further their education through classes and embrace relationships with people from different walks of life.
“I think it’s important that we all embrace these differences. It can be a little uncomfortable. It’s different, but different doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s just different, and that allows us to become better human beings,” LSU student Firdaws said.
Dr. Fuentes-Martin said LSU wants to help its students better understand what diversity means and to appreciate that. This is a lesson LSU wants its students to keep with them after graduation.
LSU offers support and other helpful resources to students who may be having a difficult time dealing with the situation. For more resources and support visit lsu.edu/lsucares.
