Student Media Director Steve Buttry passed away Sunday of pancreatic cancer at age 62. Buttry joined LSU’s Manship staff in 2014 after a 45-year career in journalism.
He worked with publications such as The Shenandoah, The Des Moines Register, and The Omaha World Register. Buttry reported and edited before transitioning to teaching and newsroom training. He became known as a digital journalism advocate and was crucial in LSU Student Media’s shift to digital platforms.
Buttry worked closely with Student Media leaders and offered guidance to individual students. He received three awards during his time at LSU, including the Chairman’s Citation from the National Press Foundation this year.
Buttry’s family requests that memorial tributes be made to the Stephen Buttry scholarship fund through the Manship school.
