President Donald Trump’s proposed wall along the U.S. southern border may stop some students from studying abroad in Mexico.
Due to increasing tensions between the United States and Mexico, LSU closed its office in Mexico, suspending the study abroad program. Director of Interdepartmental Programs in Linguistics Rafael Orozco said by suspending the program, many students will lose a great opportunity to visit Mexico.
The chances of the program coming back are slim as Orozco says “you have to start paperwork as if it had never been in place.”
That’s not only part that concerns students, as LSU student Melinda Gonzalez said the wall could hurt both immigrants and students alike. Gonzalez said arguments for the wall ignore many problems many people face in today’s society.
College Republicans of LSU did not respond to request for comment.
For now, study abroad programs to Mexico are suspended, and much of the future of the program is unknown.
