Following a subpar performance against the University of New Orleans, LSU’s bullpen looks to reaffirm itself this weekend against Maryland.
LSU coach Paul Mainieri said the Tigers’ bullpen is still coming along.
“I don’t know if anything is set in stone yet,” Mainieri said. “It’s still a work in progress.”
Junior pitcher Hunter Kiel and seniors Collin Strall and Russell Reynolds combined for 1.1 innings pitched, 10 earned runs, nine hits, and three walks against the Privateers.
The three pitchers allowed the Privateers to erase LSU’s 6-1 lead that they obtained early on and the Tigers fell 11-8.
Against Hofstra on Wednesday night, LSU’s bullpen appeared motivated from the loss.
Along with senior pitcher Hunter Newman, LSU used multitude of freshman pitchers in Todd Peterson, Nick Bush, Matthew Beck, and Will Reese against Hofstra. The five pitchers combined allowed no earned runs, two hits, two walks, and five strikeouts.
Deichmann rebounding from surgery well
The prior questions about junior right fielder Greg Deichmann’s injury status are all but gone.
After receiving facial fracture surgery less than a week before LSU’s season opener, Deichmann has responded with a tune of three home runs and a slugging percentage of 1.063 through five games. Including a home run in his first at bat of the season against Army.
Deichmann belted a home run over the right field billboard in Alex Box Stadium on Wednesday night against Hofstra.
486 feet at 108 miles per hour.
“That’s about as long of a home run that I’ve ever seen,” Mainieri said. “It’s almost legendary. You get hit in the face, break your face, and then a week later, your first at-bat and you hit a home run. That’s pretty much legendary stuff right there.”
Breaux, Jordan battling for left field spot
Entering the season, Mainieri said he was looking at sophomore Brennan Breaux and junior Beau Jordan to man the left field for the Tigers.
Through two games, Breaux is batting .375 with three hits, and Jordan is batting .111 with one hit.
Mainieri expects more out of the outfielders.
“Beau and Brennan have both done some good things,” Mainieri said. “They could do a little bit better for my liking.”
