Lady Gaga made the performance of the year as the halftime show entertainment for Super Bowl LI Sunday.
STARS: 4/5
Standing on top of the stadium, Gaga’s performance opened with a rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” which was a subtle political jab at President Donald Trump.
This song has become a popular anthem at anti-Trump rallies, but Gaga used it in such a subdued way that some people didn’t pick up on it. Though politics are something Gaga has always been very passionate about, they weren’t necessary to bring into the honorable halftime show.
Nonetheless, she put on an outstanding performance, making her political opinion so minor that it didn’t take away from the rest of her show.
After her combination of “This Land Is Your Land” and “God Bless America,” Gaga dove from the top of the stadium, suspending herself in the air. It was a move to show everyone watching how dedicated she was to putting on a great performance.
Acrobatics, pyrotechnics and backup dancers were all involved in making sure the performance lived up to the halftime show’s high expectations.
She sang a medley of all of her popular hits: “Poker Face,” “Bad Romance,” “Born This Way” and “Telephone.” She continued with her well-known, well-loved songs instead of taking advantage of her platform to promote her newest album “Joanne.”
This proves further what an amazing performer Gaga is. She was there for no other reason than to entertain the stadium crowd and the millions of people tuning in across the world.
She slowed things down with a passionate performance of her latest single, “Million Reasons.” She sat at a piano and played as she sang with outstanding vocals capable of moving the audience to tears.
“America, world, how are you doing tonight?” Gaga asked the crowd. “We’re here to make you feel good. You want to feel good with us?”
She even added, “Hi, Dad. Hi, Mom.”
By including her parents, it gave us the feeling she understood how honorable it was to be performing at the halftime show and also showed she’s a regular person just like us.
The performance came to a close with Gaga jumping off the stage and catching a football midair. It was the perfect way to get the audience excited about the game, which was soon to start again.
