One of the many traditions at the University requires a seal with a kiss.
In the 1930s, women were not allowed to leave campus more than twice a week and had a curfew, said Barry Cowan, an assistant University archivist. Valentine’s Day became an excuse for students to intermingle past their curfew on campus and eventually the activity became a tradition, he said.
On Valentine’s Day, the Memorial Tower would ring past the usual 10 p.m. and chime at midnight playing accords of famous love songs as couples gathered at the base.
The tradition holds that you are not an official “co-ed” student unless you are kissed under the bell tower at midnight.
This ritual has come and gone over the years depending on Student Government’s choice to include the affair as many students may not even know of the custom.
Lovers are lucky this year, as SG vice president, Lindsey Landry said she is working hard to continue and promote University traditions and is excited to continue the Valentine’s Day tradition on Tuesday.
Landry said she has been listening to classic love songs to help her choose a song to play at midnight and is veering toward a romantic and enjoyable song for couples of all ages.
Couples from years past have kept up the tradition and reunite at the tower each year, Landry said.
She said she wants to make the experience enjoyable for those that are new to the tradition as well and hopes there will be crowds of newcomers to enjoy the special moment.
