With the bases loaded and No. 4 LSU tied against McNeese St. 3-3, sophomore third baseman Shemiah Sanchez stepped into the batters box.
Sanchez — who was making her eighth career start — capped off the Tigers come from behind victory with her walkoff RBI single, giving LSU a 4-3 win.
LSU got out to an early lead in the first.
An RBI single from freshman first baseman Amanda Doyle put LSU on the board first. Moments later, freshman infielder Sydney Springfield hit an RBI single to bring in senior catcher Sahvanna Jaquish.
Momentum changed in the third inning when McNeese State scored three runs on three hits, taking the lead against LSU.
A double play by sophomore shortstop Amber Serrett and Sanchez ended the inning giving the Tigers a chance to regroup.
In the fourth, sophomore outfielder Elyse Thornhill and Sanchez were both hit by pitches putting them at first and second. Senior second baseman Constance Quinn attempted to load the bases for the Tigers, but was forced out, ending the inning for the Tigers.
By the time the fifth inning came around, the Tigers found themselves scoreless and hitless through three straight innings.
A controversial call by the umpire would load the bases for McNeese with two outs. The umpire ruled junior pitcher Carley Hoover hit the player with a pitch.
Despite the call, Hoover was able to get the Tigers out of jam.
A single to left field by Jaquish in the bottom of the fifth was the first hit from the Tigers since the first inning.
Freshman pitcher Sydney Smith relieved Hoover at pitcher after five innings.
Things started to fall into place for the Tigers in the sixth.
A fielding error by McNeese allowed freshman outfielder Aaliyah Andrews to advance to second after a single to the catcher.
A ground out from Sanchez gave Andrews time to slide into third putting her into scoring position.
Following that action, LSU coach Beth Torina decided to call on junior pitcher Allie Walljasper to pinch hit and she didn’t disappoint.
An RBI double line drive down left field from Walljasper tied the game.
The top of the seventh inning didn’t last long. McNeese went three up, three down and Smith added a strikeout.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jaquish hit a double down the left field line.
Doyle was then intentionally walked and a bunt from Springfield advanced Jaquish and freshman speedster Nicky Dawson, pinch ran for Doyle.
After Thornhill was intentionally walked, Sanchez ended the game with her walkoff single.
