Valentine’s Day means a heightened amount of love everywhere you look, and if you’re lucky enough to have thoughtful loved ones, it means gifts. Among the popular presents to receive are chocolates, stuffed animals, and most importantly flowers.
Local florist at Billy Heroman’s Flowers, Ben Heroman, has been working Valentine’s Day in his family’s shop since middle school. He’s no rookie to handling holiday crowds.
“I’ve been here 13 full years doing it full time,” said Heroman.
On the 14th of February every year, deliveries at Heroman’s increase from the average 100 arrangements a day to over 2500. All of this hard work doesn’t take place overnight though. Planning for Valentine’s Day begins in the summer months and flowers are ordered from growers in December.
To handle the overwhelming amount of orders on Valentine’s Day, Heroman’s starts their day at 5:30 A.M. Flowers are loaded on to delivery trucks with the help of seasonal employees hired to assist in the preparation and execution of deliveries on this special day.
Making sure orders are received is a top priority because, “research shows us people remember the last time they received flowers more than any other gift,” said Heroman.
