The streak carries on.
LSU fell 78-70 to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday night to continue its now 11-game losing streak.
LSU hasn’t beaten an opponent in 38 days. The Tigers’ last victory came in a 88-77 victory over Missouri on January 4th.
LSU went into halftime with a 40-31 lead, but were outscored 47-30 in the second half. Twenty one of those second half points coming from just sophomore guard Antonio Blakeney and sophomore guard Brandon Sampson combined.
“I thought we came out and played a good first half of basketball,” coach Johnny Jones said.
Arkansas opened the second half on a 24-4 run in the first six minutes.
The Razorbacks’ guard Dusty Hannahs shot 4-of-8 from beyond the arc in the second half after only scoring a mere three points in the first half. He finished with 17 points and shooting 5-of-10 from three.
“He played confident,” Arkansas coach Mike Anderson said about Hannahs.
Leading the way for the Tigers was Blakeney.
Blakeney reached a double-double in the first half of 10 points and 11 rebounds. He finished the game with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
LSU went to work under the basket.
The Tigers out-rebounded Arkansas 50-30 and finished with 40 points in the paint and 21 second chance points.
Junior forward Duop Reath, who finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds, accredited that effort to being motivated by losing the rebound battle in LSU’s previous game.
At halftime, LSU honored the 1991 Southeastern Conference Championship team. Among those was former LSU standout Shaquille O’Neal.
O’Neal gave a message to the team before the game started.
“The tradition of the school is not built the way we’re playing,” Blakeney said O’Neal told the team. “You just got to go out there and play hard and don’t try to be cool.”
Jones added: “I thought he sent a message to them, and had the message resonated with them, then we would have played two great halves of basketball.”
LSU now travels to Ole Miss to take on the Rebels on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
