After a disappointing loss to Ole Miss Jan. 29, the Lady Tigers bounced last weekend back with two dominating wins that resembled play similar to the first week of the season.
The Lady Tigers returned home and opened up the weekend with a sweep of Memphis on Saturday.
Freshman Jade Lewis remained undefeated against her opponents, having not lost a match in either singles or doubles play.
Lewis and fellow freshman Becca Weissmann defeated freshmen Clara Kuehn and Josephine Cao of Memphis 6-0 to give LSU an early point.
Lewis again set the tone for the Lady Tigers after defeating No. 91 Anki Wind in straight sets 6-2 and 6-1.
“I thought we did a good job in doubles with coming out and getting the early lead,” co-head coach Julia Sell said in a news release. “In singles, I thought we did a really good job of getting the early leads and never looking back.”
The Lady Tigers continued their strong play against Memphis, and only dropped one set on the day before LSU won the day with five match points.
Lewis was assisted by No. 83 junior Ryann Foster, senior Skylar Holloway, senior Abby Owens and sophomore Jessica Golovin.
The Lady Tigers gave an encore of their winning performance on Sunday, defeating North Florida 4-0 and improving to 5-1 on the season.
Lewis helped win two of the four points for the Lady Tigers on the day. The Hilton Head, South Carolina, native defeated her singles opponent in straight sets 6-2 and 6-3. She again paired with Weissmann to take a doubles match.
“I’m very excited to see the progress that’s been happening with our doubles play,” Sell said. “We’ve got three teams where the personalities really click, so we’re having a lot of success with the doubles point. It’s certainly a huge boost going into singles knowing you only need three points instead of four.”
Foster continued her solid season with a win against Quetzali Vazquez of North Florida in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Foster is 17-4 overall since play in the fall.
“Ryann has been doing a tremendous job,” Sell said. “It started last summer, she had a great fall and she’s continuing to get better day by day.”
“There’s a reason the team elected her captain. She comes and takes care of all the little things on a daily basis so her success is not surprising.”
The Lady Tigers look for continued success on their home courts next weekend as they take on South Florida Friday Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. and Houston Sunday Feb. 19 at 11 a.m.
